Papakowhai School Rules and Expectations

Social Skills Programme

Papakowhai runs a whole school, social skills programme. A social skill is chosen school wide every two to three weeks. During this time classes discuss the social skill, brainstorming what the social skill looks like and sounds like in the playground and in the classroom. Children are praised for displaying appropriate behaviour. Two children are selected from each class to receive a certificate, in front of the school, for displaying the current social skill consistently.

Social skills we focus on include…

  • Respect
  • Using appropriate language
  • Problem solving
  • Listening
  • Courtesy

Peer Mediators

We have peer mediators (senior students) who patrol the grounds during lunch times and morning tea. Rostered teachers are also on duty. The peer mediators are there to help difuse any potential conflict or disagreements. As students, the mediators could be perceived as being more approachable than a teacher.
